PLDT HomeBro uLTEra capped versus Canopy (Side by Side SpeedTest)

As promised on my previous post I'll be providing the side by side speed test between a capped plan 999 PLDT HomeBro uLTEra and HomeBro Canopy. Since the daily cap of the uLTEra plan 999 is 333 mb it would be impossible for a typical user to not reach this daily cap, this is the reason why I used the capped speed of the uLTEra to compare both connections.

VERDICT:

I decided to count the number of green points for each connection and it shows that the capped PLDT uLTEra won by a slim margin. If we analyze the results HomeBro Canopy sweep the download tests thanks to it's stable 1.6Mbps download speed which is very important if you are a heavy internet user. Meanwhile, the PLDT uLTEra sweep the upload category. Upload speed is also important because it makes sending files much faster or if you are hosting a website it makes the loading times much faster, Skype and other video conference software can also benefit from higher upload speeds.  For me I would still go with the old but stable connection, as of now this is the best example of being the latest is not always the greatest. It's like having a Playstation 3 and Playstation4 wherein a PS3 is more utilized because of the titles that are available and as for PS4 the primary use of the device for now is for watching videos on Netflix.

I would be missing my Canopy connection since you can tweak the modem. Let's say your current base station is under maintenance you can switch to another base station as long as you know the admin password and you know which settings to change.

So if you are out of the 24 months lock in period of your Canopy connection, think twice if you want to have it upgraded to uLTEra. Now it would be a different story if you decide to choose the uLTEra plan 1299 or 1699 because we all know that it would be a runaway winner. So, what do you think about the side by side tests should you upgrade or not? Let's head on to the comments section to discuss the options.

Comments

  1. Panalo pa rin canopy for me. but like you said important din ang upload speed for video calls and file transfer. i disagree with this 'Now it would be a different story if you decide to choose the uLTEra plan 1299 or 1699 because we all know that it would be a runaway winner. '

plan 1299 is 5 mbps with 1.5 mpbs when capped. the daily cap is around 500 mb. ubos na kaagad yan sa isang game patch so you'll be stuck with 1.5 mpbs until reset. so essentially you're paying P 1299 for 1.5 mpbs speed (which you can get with canopy!).

canopy has better latency for me (i live < 2 miles from base station)

walang tatalo sa tweaking ng canopy (via canopy settings page). saan ka pa makaka adjust ng AP, QoS, do line tests , etc except on canopy?? canopy FTW!

sorry to hear ma disconnect na canopy mo bro. ok yung blog mo warning people of the pitfalls of ultera.

  6. Good review! Medyo nag iisip na tuloy ako if itutuloy ko pa ung pag migrate ko sa ULTERA since ung Canopy connection ko sobrang unstable na. And hindi siya umaabot ng greater than 1.4mbps download speed and ung ping ay sobrang taas.

Need ko pa naman ng reliable internet connection for gaming and work from home setup. Tapos na reject ung application ko for DSL connection since di daw feasible maglagay ng DSL line sa amin so ULTERA na lang ata talaga ang last hope ko.

What do you guys think? Should I stay or should I go?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Aldreiz,
Pwede mo check yung previous post namin about ultera

DOWN sa 0.9Kbps. :( kala ko UPGRADE, DOWN GRADE pala. tanong kulang po, yung download po kasi 0.9mbps, yung upload 1.0 Mbps pwede ba ilagay yung 0.5 to download para yung download maging 1.4mb. hindi ko naman masyadu ginagamit ang upload kasi. uhuhuhuhu

I hope sana mag stable lang connections ko hehehe di ko pa ramdam ang capping nila as of now.

Madami kami sa bahay pero up to 7 devices lang ang pwede mag connect at the same given time sa ultera.

Pwede ba akong bumili ng sariling wireless router? If yes, paano ang setup?..

    1. Outdoor antenna > ultera modem/router > self-provided wireless router or,
    2. Outdoor antenna > self-provided wireless router

Hindi ko kasi alam kung tatanggalin ko na ung pldt provided modem/router to give way sa sarili kong wireless router or ikakabit ko ung self-provided wireless router sa pldt homebro ultera modem/router.

And pa suggest na rin ng magandang wireless router, budget is 2k. Hehe. Thanks!

I have been a canopy subscriber for 8 years. so far wlang problema dito s area ko (angeles city), khit bumagyo stable prin ang connection ko. Just the other day 2 field sales technician ang dumating magkasunod ng araw at kinoconvince ako n mgpaupgrade.eh ayaw ng anak ko saka ng brother ko kc dami nilang nbbsa n negative reviews about ultera. i told them n pg nakalipat n kmi saka nlng ako ttwag saknila kung mgppaupgrade ako. binigyan nila ko ng waiver n kinacancel ko ung upgrading to ultera. kaso ang nakalagay dun wlang notification dw if incase madisconnect ako agad sa canopy dahil ipephase out ang canopy. which is sbi ko s technician napakaunfair sa tulad kong old subscriber ng canopy. they cannot answer my question and iniwan si waiver. few hours me nagcall and asked me kung tlagang ikacancel n rw ung upgrading ko i told him oo kc di pko makapgdecide dahil we are planning to move into another location. sbi nya once dw materminate na ung canopy contract ko eh automatic dw na mawwalan ako ng connection and pg nagpaupgrade dw ako ng ultera eh me charges na rw. so i told him na bk di nrin ako magultera kung ganon, ill try to find another provider. me and my daughter work at home kya di pwedeng super bagal ng internet. okay nmn ang pldt dsl dito so bk un nlng ang kunin ko if ever. pg kausap mo nmn ung mga cs s hotline they will tell you na di p nmn ipephase out ung canopy. kya ang hirap magdecide :(

Just migrated to Ultera today without my knowledge, naisahan ako ng PLDT shit. almost 4 years na ako sa Canopy after my 3rd year bumagal na siya, di na stable ang connection so tawag ako ng tawag sa *1888. Good job. Good and bam! Naknam! Badtrip ako pero walang magawa yung supervisor. Sayang yung chance ko nung nabigyan ako ng 5mbps plan for only 999 :(

Ang Canopy needs direct line of sight, while Ultera is like a SMARTPHONE.

I have no internet about 11 days ago. I am a Smart Bro Canopy subscriber more than 10 years ago. Good thing I have read your blog. I want to make sure before I decide to go for Ultera. The first time medyo humina, then nawala yung net, then sabi ng *1888 hintay lang ako ng 24 hrs kasi may misalignment sa antenna. Kinabukasan, okay na..until gabii ulit wala na talaga. Nagtaka lang ako, kasi after a day, tumawag na yung PLDT kung humina ba yung connections ko. Sabi ko wala na nga connection. So they offered me about ULtera. So glad I have read this blog para alam ko na rin maisagot ko pagdating ng technician in the next couple of days. I still want the canopy back to function. nakakapag 65-72 mbps ako neto kasi ang lapit lang ng signal tower sa amin..less than 100 meters lang. Kaya di ako maniniwalang may sira or slow connections. Alam ko dahil lang gusto nila i convert lahat to Ultera. So kung pipilitin ako. I would rather have it disconnected. Salamat ulit sa blog and feedback.

Got a call today from pldt, I'm also a canopy user and will have my lock in period expire this July 2016 I believe. How true is this. Thanks sa mga sasagot and more power to you OP.

    1. that's BS. One of their field tech went here to check our service because we reported it not working then they found out the power adapter is busted. the tech gave us option to change to ultera but the catch is you'll be locked in for 3yrs. plus its capped already unlike canopy. I guess they are trying to faced-out canopy and wimax that is why they come up with ultera. :-)

  39. medyo matagal na ang post na ito but it is very helpful. Thank you for this review. Around 2006 pa po kaming canopy ngayon lang kami nagkaproblema ng malala dahil power adapter ang issue. until now di pa naayos ang internet namin. walang assurance when magkakaroon ng stocks nang mga bagong adapter. they offered ultera locked in for 3yrs with capped. humindi ako dahil I'm working home mom. may sis and hubby is used to streaming and watching videos. I doubt their 30 gb would work for us. also the price is not reasonable for me if it will be compared to canopy where we are only paying 799/month. Baka meron po dito may power adapter pa that still working bilhin ko na lang po. just pm me.

  40. I have a question sirs.

Iyong PLDT ultera ba using the same signal as Smart LTE/3G via smartphone? Tine test ko kasi speed ng Smart LTE sa bahay namin, kung same magiging performance in case mag Ultera ako.

I am still a canopy user. Binagabagalan na kasi nila canopy namin. 0.1 mbps download during daytime, but 1.3mbps after 12midnight. Sadya no?

    Thanks sa reply.

  41. Ok thanks for the reply anonymous...

Until putulin nila.

My other options are Sky broadband, Globelines and Bayantel.

Or buy an open line LTE sim modem and switch between smart and globe sims depending on current performance.

13th Month Pay Bonus Calculator

There are a lot of articles that have been published on how to compute the 13th month pay and I have read most of it however, I think it’s missing the actual calculator that can compute our estimated 13th month pay. The 13th month pay calculator that we have created would be beneficial especially for those employees who have been employed by the company for less than a year because, the amount of the 13th month pay will be pro-rated (will depend on the number of days or months of service). Based on DOLE’s Department Advisory  the number of days for leave without pay should be taken into consideration. Computation 1: If you have been employed by your company for more than a year use the computation below; Computation 2: Pro- Rated computation. If you have been employed by your company for less than a year use the computation below; Our Calculator has used the formula above to compute your estimated 13th month pay.  How to use the calculator: If you hav
